USA College Decision-Making Process as an International Student Athlete

Step 1: Decision-Making Process

Have you ever wondered what life is like as a student athlete?

If you are at the time of your life when you need to decide whether this is an opportunity for you, you are at the right place. As a former athlete, I understand what it means to have your sport as the center of your attention and as your main source of pleasure and focus.

When it was time to decide which college to go to, I was left confused. I was unsure and not ready to make this decision as I did not find another field that moves me the same way sport does.

In Serbia, where I am from, and in most countries you are not able to play professional sport and be successful and present academically. As I was thinking what the next step could be, I knew that I do not want to give up the sport I love, or not pursue my education.

If you are at a crossroads and are feeling the same as I was, you are not alone. Many athletes love the sport they play, but are also aware of the importance of education.

To get the best of both worlds, I decided to pursue my journey in the USA, playing volleyball and studying at one of the prestigious universities.

Benefits of the USA College

As I mentioned earlier, the decision to go to the USA made the most sense for me. It was a way to continue pursuing the sport I love while also receiving an education from a world-class institution. It felt like a win-win situation, where I could finally find balance between my passion and my future.

In the US, I knew I’d have access to resources unlike anything I’d experienced before. As an athlete, the conditions were unmatched. I would have unlimited access to top-tier gear, shoes, and training facilities. I could train anytime, with coaches who were ready to provide individual and group video sessions, alongside a full team of experts dedicated to my success.

I would have access to athletic trainers and recovery equipment along with a nutritionist, sport psychologist, and strength and conditioning coaches. Every expert was there to ensure I stayed healthy, ready, and performing at my best.

As a student, you’d have access to well-thought-out student centers, with pools, saunas, climbing walls, and group fitness classes like dance, yoga, and pilates. The libraries, student lounges, and career advising centers were all available to support your academic success. Academic advisors are there to track your progress, helping you stay on course to achieve your degree.

As an individual, you would have an opportunity to join various student organizations in the field of your interest, and develop professionally. Universities organize many seminars and bring in guest speakers where you can connect and learn. Furthermore there are job opportunities on campus where you are able to gain work experience through which you can also start building financial independence.

Another benefit of great importance is the flexibility in academic life. In the US, students have the chance to explore general classes during the first year or two, helping them decide what field they want to study. And if you change your mind along the way? No problem—advisors will help you switch majors without losing time, ensuring you reach your academic goals. This means you will declare your major as undecided or undeclared, still complete coursework required for all degrees, and choose later on. This option gives you time to better understand yourself and study something that truly interests you.
